Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), the country's largest state-owned steel producer, has set an ambitious target of reaching 35 million tonnes of crude steel capacity by fiscal year 2030-31. The plan represents a significant expansion from the company's current installed capacity and forms a central part of India's broader push to increase domestic steel production to meet surging infrastructure and manufacturing demand.
According to the strategic roadmap, SAIL will place increased emphasis on raising the proportion of high-value-added and special steel products in its output mix. This shift aligns with growing domestic demand from automotive, construction, and engineering sectors that require advanced steel grades. The company's expansion plan includes upgrades to existing facilities as well as new capacity additions across its integrated steel plants.
SAIL's capacity target comes amid a broader boom in India's steel industry, which has seen production rise to approximately 169 million tonnes in 2026 from 104 million tonnes in 2021. India's total installed steel capacity currently stands at around 220 million tonnes and is expected to approach 300 million tonnes by 2030, driven by both public and private sector investment. The country's expanding steel sector is also reshaping global raw material trade flows, particularly for metallurgical coal and coke, as domestic supply remains insufficient to meet the demands of growing production capacity.
