Swedish steelmaker SSAB has signaled expectations for further strengthening of European steel prices, citing the improving supply-demand balance brought about by the European Union's latest trade defense measures. The company's outlook reflects growing confidence in the European flat-rolled steel market as protective policies begin to reshape competitive dynamics.

According to SSAB, the EU's recent trade measures, including revised safeguard quotas and anti-dumping duties on certain steel imports, are helping to stabilize the regional market by curbing low-priced overseas supply. This has created a more favorable pricing environment for European producers who have faced sustained pressure from import competition in recent years.

The company noted that demand from key end-user segments, particularly automotive and construction equipment, remains resilient despite broader macroeconomic headwinds. SSAB also highlighted that its high-strength steel product portfolio continues to see strong customer interest, as downstream industries increasingly prioritize lightweight and durable materials for decarbonisation goals.

Industry observers point out that the EU's evolving trade policy framework, including the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and tightened safeguard measures, is gradually redirecting trade flows and compressing import volumes into the bloc. This trend is expected to support domestic producer pricing power through the remainder of 2026 and into early 2027.

SSAB's positive assessment aligns with broader market sentiment that European steel fundamentals are improving, though risks remain from fluctuating energy costs and potential demand softening if industrial activity slows during the winter season.
