The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has announced the finalists for the 17th edition of the Steelie Awards, recognising member companies for their outstanding contributions to the steel industry over the past year. The awards span six distinct categories, covering areas such as innovation, sustainability, safety, and stakeholder engagement. The winners will be revealed on Monday, 12 October 2026.
The Steelie Awards have become a prestigious annual benchmark within the global steel community, highlighting excellence across the entire value chain from production to end-use applications. By showcasing best practices and innovative approaches, the programme encourages continuous improvement and knowledge sharing among steel producers worldwide.
Alongside the awards announcement, worldsteel also reported that 51 organisations participated in its Climate Action Data Collection Programme 2026, reflecting the industry's growing commitment to transparent emissions reporting and collaborative decarbonisation efforts. The programme gathers carbon dioxide emissions data from steelmaking sites globally, providing a foundation for benchmarking and progress tracking toward the Paris Agreement goals.
In a related development, worldsteel's Construct Steel division released a new white paper on the decarbonisation of the steel industry, developed in partnership with the Council on Vertical Urbanism. The paper offers a practical, construction-focused overview of current decarbonisation measures and realistic medium-term pathways, aiming to bridge the gap between steel producers and the construction sector, which accounts for a significant share of global steel demand.
These initiatives collectively underscore the steel industry's dual focus on celebrating excellence while advancing the sustainability and low-carbon transition agenda that will shape the sector's future.
