The China Iron and Steel Association held its third-quarter information release conference on October 30, 2026, calling on the entire industry to push forward with transformation toward innovation, intelligent manufacturing, green low-carbon development, and high-quality growth. The conference emphasized that the steel sector must forge ahead despite challenges and accelerate its shift toward more sustainable and technologically advanced production models.
The association highlighted four key directions for the industry. First, pursuing new breakthroughs through innovation in steelmaking processes and product development. Second, advancing intelligent manufacturing by integrating digital technologies and automation across production lines. Third, accelerating green and low-carbon transformation to align with national carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals. Fourth, achieving high-quality development through improved efficiency, product quality, and structural optimization.
The briefing took place alongside a major industry conference focused on the global steel sector's low-carbon future, which opened on October 29. That event brought together domestic and international stakeholders to discuss decarbonisation pathways, clean steel technologies, and collaborative approaches to reducing the carbon footprint of steel production worldwide.
The association also reported on its statistics and information work committee annual meeting held in Tianjin on the same day, where industry-wide data collection and analysis priorities were established for the coming year. The meeting underscored the importance of accurate and timely statistical reporting to support evidence-based policy decisions and market transparency.
These developments come at a critical juncture for the Chinese steel industry, which produced 73.6 million tonnes of crude steel in September 2026 according to worldsteel data, essentially flat year-on-year. With domestic demand facing headwinds from a prolonged property downturn and weak infrastructure investment, the push toward high-value-added products and green transformation is seen as essential for maintaining global competitiveness.
